Intl Design Competition: House of Arts and Culture, Lebanon

It seems the rebuilding Beirut is going to thrive and hopefully going to give a big leap in her culture heritage this time. The Ministry of Culture of Lebanon has declared an international architectural competition to design the House of Arts and Culture in the heart of Beirut city. The competition is open to any registered architect (registered or member of institute of their own country) from any country (association of architects is also allowed). The first prize winning entry will get the commission for building the project on site. There are monetary prizes for second and third prize winning entries as well.
Registration Deadline: 29th September 2008
Submission Deadline: 30th January 2009
Registration Fee: $ 250 USD non refundable (online registration is open and money transaction can be online or via bank to bank)

The House of Arts and Culture is the first large cultural project to be built in Lebanon. Funded by a grant from the Sultanate of Oman to the Ministry of Culture, it will be located in the capital city of Beirut. The House will offer spaces for the performing and visual arts, for documentation and for training. An incubator for the development of creativity in the country, it will reinforce the role of Beirut as a central place in the international arts scene.
The House of Arts and Culture (the Lebanese-Omani Centre) will be a space for cultural and artistic production, for exchange and interaction between the largest number of Lebanese and especially the youth. It will be an independent space with the aim to contribute to social communication and cultural expansion and to promote creativity in different fields of art and culture.

Call for Portfolio| Architectural Records Design Vanguard 2008
on Thursday 17 July 2008 - 07:22:41 | by admin Every December, ARCHITECTURAL RECORD publishes its Design Vanguard issue, featuring the work of 10 emerging architects/firms from around the world. Although A.R. do not have a specific age limit for candidates, they tend to select architects who have been out of architectural school for 10 years or less. To be considered for this year's Design Vanguard, send a hardcopy portfolio (no larger than 15 x 20 inches) with 5-8 projects (both built and unbuilt), along with CVs of the firm's partners and a short statement of the firm's design approach/philosophy.
The cost to enter is $50. Please make checks payable to Architectural Record magazine. They will not accept payment in any foreign currency or credit cart charges; please send checks and money orders.

Exhibition of Bangladeshi Architecture in Sydney
on Wednesday 16 July 2008 - 10:46:08 | by admin The Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) and Bangladeshi Architects in Australia (BAA) is jointly organizing a seminar and architectural exhibition titled “Architectural Excellence in Bangladesh”. The exhibition has also been accepted as a part of “Sydney Design Festival 2008”.
The exhibition will present selected architectural works completed in Bangladesh by International and Bangladeshi architects as well as works by contemporary architects practicing in Bangladesh. The exhibition will also include selected works by Architects and Architectural students of Bangladeshi origin now living in Australia.
The primary purpose of this seminar and exhibition is to introduce the excellent continuation of architectural heritage in Bangladesh and the influence of western architecture in contemporary professional practice. The talk will highlight evolution of Bengal Architecture from early 8th century to contemporary Architecture and the contributions of International Architects in the modern architectural development in Bangladesh.
The RAIA & BAA invites everyone to join in this unique occasion.
Many of renowned Bangladeshi architects may attend the event, few of the names still could heard from the organizer are: Shamsul Wares, Rafiq Azam, Enamul Karim Nirhar, Mustofa Khalid Polash, Patrick D Rojario, IAB President Mubasshar Hussain and possibly Nurur Rahman Khan.
